Hervé Di Rosa
b. 1959
Hervé Di Rosa was born in 1959 in Sète, Hérault, France, and is a French painter best known as a key figure in the "Figuration Libre" movement. His work, which spans paintings, sculptures, installations, and animations, is characterized by a humorous, brash style that embraces kitsch and what he calls "Art Modeste." He brings to life unique characters, drawing from influences that include graffiti and comic books, with a visual energy that echoes American contemporaries like Keith Haring, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Kenny Scharf. In the comics world, Di Rosa was active in 1987, contributing as an artist, colorist, inker, letterer, and writer on 15 issues, most notably for the French titles *Pif* and *(À Suivre)*. In 2000, he founded the Museum of Modest Art in his hometown of Sète to celebrate this aesthetic. His work has been exhibited internationally, including a 2006 show at the Bass Museum in Miami, and he has regularly shown with Gallery Haim-Chanin in New York and Louis Carré et Cie. in Paris.
