Gustave Doré was a French artist whose wood-engraved illustrations for classic literature made him one of the most widely reproduced image-makers of the 19th century. Born Paul Gustave Louis Christophe Doré on 6 January 1832 in Strasbourg, France, he showed precocious talent, producing his first published work at age 15. By his twenties, he was a sought-after illustrator and caricaturist for Parisian journals like *Le Journal pour rire*. His signature style—dramatic, intricately detailed black-and-white compositions—reached its peak in his illustrations for the Vulgate Bible and Dante’s *Divine Comedy*, works that sold in enormous simultaneous editions across Europe and America. At the height of his career, Doré employed some 40 block-cutters to transfer his designs onto wood, though he rarely cut the blocks himself. He illustrated over 10,000 scenes, including works by Rabelais, Milton, and Cervantes. While popular with the public, his art drew mixed reviews from critics during his lifetime. He died in Paris on 23 January 1883 at age 51. Posthumously, his influence grew, admired by writers such as H. P. Lovecraft and Théophile Gautier. Doré’s illustrations have been reprinted into the 21st century, appearing in modern comics including *Cerebus in Hell?* and *Crisis of Infinite Cerebi*.
