François Craenhals
1926–2004
François Craenhals was a Belgian comics artist born on 15 November 1926 and died on 2 August 2004. He is best remembered for creating the medieval adventure series *Chevalier Ardent* and the lighthearted mystery series *Les 4 As* (also known as *Die Vier* or *The Four Aces*). Craenhals began his career in the late 1940s, contributing to magazines such as *Kuifje* (the Dutch edition of *Tintin*), where he honed a clean, ligne claire style that balanced dynamic action with gentle humor. His most prolific period ran from the 1950s through the 1970s, during which he worked as writer, artist, colorist, and inker on over 100 issues. *Chevalier Ardent*, a chivalric fantasy, and *Les 4 As*, a series about four children solving puzzles, became his signature works, often in collaboration with scriptwriter Georges Chaulet. Craenhals’s art was noted for its warm, expressive characters and crisp storytelling. Later in life, he continued to draw and color until the early 2000s, leaving a legacy of family-friendly adventure comics that remain popular in Europe. He received no major international awards widely reported in English, but his work is celebrated among Franco-Belgian bande dessinée enthusiasts.
