Frédéric-Antonin Breysse
Frédéric-Antonin Breysse, born 20 November 1907 in France, was a French cartoonist and illustrator best known for creating the comic series *The Adventures of Oscar Hamil*. He launched the strip in the weekly *Message to the Hearts Valiant and Valiant Hearts*, where it ran from 1945 to 1955. Breysse’s path into comics began as a self-taught artist, and his clean, expressive linework defined the gentle humor of the series. He was the sole creator of *Oscar Hamil*, writing and drawing the adventures of its mischievous young hero. Later in his career, he contributed as an artist and inker on 13 issues between 1980 and 1982, most notably on the title *Oscar en Isidoor*. Breysse passed away on 13 September 2001 at the age of 93. While he did not receive major awards during his lifetime, his work remains a fondly remembered example of mid-century French children’s comics, appreciated for its warmth and simplicity.
