Bill Woggon
1911–2003
Bill Woggon was an American cartoonist born on January 1, 1911, in Toledo, Ohio, the fourth of six children. He passed away on March 2, 2003. He is best remembered as the creator of Katy Keene, the fashion-forward comic book character who became a beloved fixture in the Archie Comics universe and earned Woggon credits as artist, inker, letterer, and writer across well over 150 issues.
His path into drawing began at home, where he grew up watching his older brother Elmer pursue an art correspondence course. That early exposure sparked a lasting passion. At sixteen, Woggon landed a commercial artist position at a Toledo department store, then moved on to similar work at the Toledo Blade, the same newspaper where Elmer was employed.
That practical grounding in commercial and decorative art shaped his approach to comics. Katy Keene, which showcased elaborate fashions often designed by readers whose names appeared in the stories, reflected his background in display and design work. The title ran across multiple formats — including Katy Keene Comics, Katy Keene Fashion Book Magazine, and Katy Keene Pin-up Parade — alongside contributions to Pep Comics, Laugh Comics, and Suzie Comics. Woggon's work fostered an unusually interactive relationship between creator and audience, and Katy Keene has retained a devoted readership long after his active years.
