André Franquin was a Belgian comics artist born on 3 January 1924, who became one of the most significant figures in Franco-Belgian comics history. He died on 5 January 1997, just two days after his seventy-third birthday.

Franquin came to prominence in 1946 when he took over the long-running adventure strip Spirou et Fantasio, a assignment that would define the first major chapter of his career. Over the following two decades he shaped the series into something distinctly his own, and the stretch from 1946 to 1968 is widely regarded as the strip's golden age. His work across those years demonstrated a remarkable range — fluid, expressive linework combined with a gift for both physical comedy and genuine storytelling momentum.

Beyond Spirou, Franquin created two characters who would cement his lasting reputation. Gaston, a lovably incompetent office layabout, became a beloved institution in Belgian popular culture. The Marsupilami, a fantastical spotted creature introduced within the Spirou universe, proved equally enduring and eventually anchored its own franchise.

Over a career spanning from the mid-1940s into the following decades, Franquin worked across a remarkable volume of material — credited as artist, writer, inker, colorist, and letterer on well over a thousand issues. His influence on European comics draftsmanship and humor remains deeply felt among successive generations of cartoonists.
